L’écriture et la typographie forment un couple incestueux qui s’inspire mutuellement depuis le XVIe siècle. Le caractère Nicostrate, anachronique et hybride, est le fruit de leur relation. Il provient plus précisément d’une étude des variations formelles d’un manuscrit atypique de la Renaissance Italienne, l’Amyris (1478–80) de Mario Filelfo, mis en tension avec des formes géométriques inspirées de Edward Johnston et Paul Renner.
S’appuyant sur les possibilités du format numérique OpenType, il joue avec les pulsions de l’écriture sans pour autant les singer et les figer. Il est doté de nombreuses options stylistiques : variations contextuelles, extensions ornementales et ligatures, créant alors une image de texte riche.
Son dessin se déploie en trois ‹ saveurs › différentes : formes brisées et surprenantes, ouvertures et structures historiques, variantes au ductus continu.
Ses variations peuvent se combiner et multiplier les possibilités typographiques. Elles créent un système souple, offrant des niveaux de lectures subtils et de grandes possibilités graphiques.
Writing and typography form an incestuous couple that have mutually inspired each other since the 16th century. The antiquated hybrid typeface Nicostrate is the fruit of that relationship. More precisely, Nicostrate draws from studying a peculiar Italian Renaissance manuscript, Amyris (1478–80) by Mario Filelfo and juxtaposing this with geometric form inspired by Edward Johnston and Paul Renner.
Nicostrate takes advantage of the possibilities of OpenType to play with the expressive qualities of writing without mimicking nor immobilising it. It comes with many stylistic options – contextual alternates, ornamental features and ligatures – making for a colourful text. It has been drawn in three ‘flavours’: surprising broken forms, ‘historical’ structures , alternate glyphs with uninterrupted ductus. These variations can be combined to expand the typographic possibilities. They create a flexible system offering subtle changes in the reading experience and greater graphic possibilities.
