Le Kaltoum est un caractère typographique multiscript latin-arabe nommé en référence à la cantatrice Oum Kalthoum. Afin de donner une direction à mon projet, j’ai défini comme cible une entreprise dans le domaine culturel. Le point de départ de mon processus de création fut la calligraphie. J’ai expérimenté avec l’angle de la plume afin de pouvoir observer ses effets sur la répartition de la graisse et l’orientation de l’axe. Puis, j’ai sélectionné les formes les plus intéressantes que j’ai ensuite transférées et modifiées sur du papier calque. En observant de plus près le latin, vous pourrez noter certains détails tels que les empattements concaves et le contraste partiellement inversé. Pour l’arabe, comme il s’agit d’un système d’écriture différent du latin, j’ai voulu conserver ses caractéristiques particulières et éviter la latinisation. J’ai donc opté pour une harmonisation en finesse entre le latin et l’arabe à travers la modulation de l’épaisseur du trait.
Kaltoum is a multiscript type character for latin and arabic named after the singer Oum Kalthoum. In order to steer my project in a particular direction, I defined my target as a company working in the cultural field. The starting point of my creative process was calligraphy. I experimented with the angle of the pen in order to observe how it affected the width of the strokes and the slant of the axis. Next, I selected the most interesting shapes which I then transferred and modified using tracing paper. If you look closely at the latin, you can observe some details such as the concave serifs and the partially reversed contrast. For the arabic, a writing system which differs from latin, I wanted to preserve its specific characteristics and to avoid latinising it. So I chose to subtly harmonise the latin and the arabic by modulating the thickness of the stroke.
